Home About Us My Rats Litters Shows Contact Links

I do not condone culling of animals, whether it be kittens or older rats. Not only do I think this is an unnecessary practice as each rat is first and foremost my pet, but I also see it a loss of important data to my breeding lines. All of the rats I breed are pets, and any I might not find homes for will remain here for the rest of their lives.

Does are usually bred from once, however in some circumstances I may use a doe for two litters. Any more than this can put unnecessary strain on the doe as she may not have time to recover between litters. Although my bucks sire more litters, I believe that one buck is not the perfect match for every doe each will usually sire a maximum of three litters.

The most important thing I consider when breeding rats is health. For this reason, I will never breed from a sick rat. I also find it vital to keep records of my litters, therefore I ask any owners of Symphony rats to keep me updated with their progress. I send out an update form roughly every six months to find out how each rat is doing, but appreciate being contacted without being prompted (photos are also very welcome). I use Tenset Breeders' Assistant to store this data and also to create pedigrees. Temperament is also paramount when breeding rats. My aim is for Symphony rats to be friendly, active and attention-seeking. As well as these factors I aim to produce lovely looking rats; fitting with the NFRS standards for their variety, breeding a few show winners along the way.

Before homing rats, I ask that all potential owners fill in an application form (found on the Contact page). This is an easy way for me to gain a quick overview of what you are like as an owner, and may be a chance to raise any specific questions you have. It is not a test and there are no 'perfect answers'. If an owner is no longer able to look after their rats, I ask that they are returned to me. They may either stay here or I may find a suitable new home for them. I am always available to owners by phone or e-mail if you have any questions or problems with rats, and am happy to help out or advise at any time.
